How to manage your PacePoints budget

Adjusting your PacePoints budget helps you pace more effectively

Overview

  • We don't recommend changing your budget often, so your data is easy to compare over time and you can see how well you've paced long term.

  • If your resting heart rate changes (medication, change in condition) you may need to change your PacePoints budget.

  • Many factors can affect your budget, and if you're under or over your budget because of a temporary change in your health or circumstances, you shouldn't change your budget.

  • If you're not sure if your budget needs changing or need any assistance, reach out to Member Support.

How do I know that my PacePoints budget is right for me?

Your PacePoints budget should help you balance rest and activity throughout the day to prevent triggering symptoms or causing a crash.

  • If you are consistently exceeding your budget, but don't feel like you're overdoing it, you might want to increase your PacePoints budget.

  • If you are consistently under your budget, but feel like you're overdoing it and can never reach your budget without feeling worse, you might want to lower your PacePoints budget.

  • We recommend a number where you feel you can do a stable amount of activity each day, without doing too little, or doing so much that you notice your symptoms worsen.

It can take time to find the right budget, so don’t worry if you need to adjust it more than once.

How do heart rate zones affect PacePoints?

You earn PacePoints based on how much time you spend in each zone. If your zones aren’t accurate, your notifications and graphs won’t reflect how you use energy, or how you actually feel. So adjusting your zones will affect how quickly you use your PacePoints budget.

You can use our guide on how to manage your heart rate zones to check if your zones need adjusting first.

When should I change my PacePoints budget?

You shouldn't need to change your PacePoints budget unless there's been a significant change in your condition or how you manage it. Examples of this include:

  • You've started or stopped a long-term medication that may impact your heart rate.

  • A significant, long-term change to your condition which has caused a definite increase or decrease to your heart rate.

  • Your points budget doesn't feel right:

    • You are using significantly more points without a worsening of symptoms

    • You are using way fewer than your budget but feeling a worsening of symptoms

    • You have changed your heart rate zones, which has changed how many points you use each day, without a change in activity.

Because PacePoints generate based on your heart rate zones, you should always adjust your heart rate zones first, then your PacePoints budget. Both can take some time before you find what works best for you.

We don't recommend changing your PacePoint budget too regularly. The goal is to find a stable amount of activity you can do each day that won't worsen your symptoms.

Keeping your budget consistent will help you gain better insights into how effectively you're pacing and help you balance your exertion levels throughout the day.
